Rear entry doors leading out to a deck take a heavy beating from both foot traffic and the extreme Alberta elements. The homeowners wanted to address a few major pain points with this renovation:
Eliminating Severe Drafts: Rear doors are often highly exposed to cold northern winds. The existing door was letting heat bleed out, making the interior living space chilly.
Flexible Summer Ventilation: The client wanted to be able to leave the back door open to enjoy a breeze and keep an eye on the backyard deck, but needed a secure screen to keep bugs and pests out.
Two Doors, One Frame Clearance: Installing a secondary storm door over a pre-hung exterior door requires precise spacing. If the handles conflict or the closing hardware isn’t calibrated perfectly, the storm door won’t latch on its own.
We tore out the old unit and prepped the rough opening to ensure a perfectly level foundation.
Thermal Core Performance: We installed a premium core entry door that offers exceptional thermal resistance, preventing energy loss during deep winter freezes.
Smart Security Integration: The door was outfitted with a modern satin-nickel lever handle paired with an electronic smart lock deadbolt, offering keyless entry right from the deck.
Crisp Architectural Trim: The interior frame was wrapped in clean casing trim that lines up beautifully with the baseboards and new luxury vinyl plank flooring.
Over the main door, we installed a rugged, white-framed aluminum storm door that acts as a shield for the home’s primary envelope.
Retractable Screen Technology: This premium model features a hidden, pull-down screen mesh. In the winter, the solid glass face stands full-view to block wind and snow. In the summer, the glass slides down effortlessly to reveal a screen, allowing a massive cross-breeze into the house.
Pneumatic Automatic Closer: We mounted a heavy-duty pneumatic closing piston at the base of the frame. This ensures that even when kids or guests head out to the deck, the door closes automatically, smoothly, and securely behind them without slamming.
