The client needed to replace or upgrade their exterior entrance to accommodate mobility needs without sacrificing the utility of a beautiful backyard deck. The project presented unique structural requirements:
True Barrier-Free Accessibility: The deck required a wheelchair-accessible ramp that met safety guidelines, meaning a gentle slope calculation that avoided steep, unsafe inclines.
Smart Space Management: Because an accessible ramp requires significant linear footage, the layout needed to wrap efficiently (switchback design) to preserve valuable lawn space.
Maximum Seating Capacity: The client wanted plenty of space for family gatherings without cluttering the deck platform with bulky, moveable patio furniture.
We engineered a gorgeous, multi-flight wood ramp that integrates seamlessly into the main deck structure.
Gentle, Safe Grading: Built with precise run-to-rise calculations to ensure smooth, effortless wheelchair and walker transitions.
Switchback Turn Platform: Features a wide, stable mid-landing pad that allows for safe, easy 180-degree turns.
Continuous Safety Guardrails: Wrapped tightly with code-compliant vertical spindles and solid wood handcaps to provide absolute stability and peace of mind.
The main deck platform offers an enormous, level surface optimized for outdoor living.
Integrated Wrap-Around Seating: To save space, we constructed custom benches along the entire rear perimeter. Using heavy-duty black steel support brackets anchored directly into the deck frame, these benches provide rock-solid seating that will never tip or warp.
Ergonomic Angled Backrests: The benches feature a slight backward lean and integrated top rails, offering incredible comfort for afternoon relaxation.
Clean Skirting Finish: The entire lower perimeter of the deck and ramp is enclosed with matching wood skirting, hiding the structural posts and concrete footings for a premium look.
