The homeowners wanted to modernize their front entrance and adjacent living area. The original configurations presented several common challenges for properties in mature Edmonton neighborhoods:
Dark Foyer, But Privacy Needed: Grand, high-ceiling foyers look spectacular but are often dark. The client wanted to flood the entryway and stairwell with natural sunlight using a transom and sidelights, but without sacrificing privacy or exposing the home’s interior directly to the street.
Thermal Performance in Vaulted Spaces: High-ceiling entryways trap rising heat. If the upper transom window or main door system leaks air, it creates a severe chimney effect, pulling freezing cold air in from the bottom seals during Alberta winters.
Complex, Multi-Window Trim Alignment: Installing three separate window elements around a single door frame (door, two sidelights, and an overhead transom), plus an asymmetric awning window combo, requires absolute precision to ensure the interior trim packages line up seamlessly.
We engineered a grand front entrance assembly that maximizes light while locking out extreme weather.
Decorative Privacy Core: The new main entry door features a striking central glass insert with an elegant textured geometric pattern. This allows natural light to enter while completely obscuring the view from the outside for total privacy.
Sidelights & Transom Architecture: We surrounded the door with matching full-height vertical sidelights and an independent upper transom window. This creates a massive wall of light that instantly brightens the entire main floor and upper staircase.
Airtight Thermal Gapping: The entire multi-piece perimeter was injected with low-expansion, closed-cell insulation foam and finished with industrial-grade weatherstripping to eliminate high-ceiling heat loss.
In the adjacent living area, we installed a custom multi-panel window designed for beautiful views and smart ventilation.
Fixed-to-Awning Engineering: The upper two-thirds consists of a massive, fixed picture window frame maximizing natural light. The bottom third features an independent, crank-out awning window.
Rain-Resistant Ventilation: Awning windows hinge from the top and swing outward at the base. This allows the homeowner to leave the window open for fresh air during summer rain showers without water entering the home.

Ornamental Fluted Casings: Instead of standard flat trim, we framed the door, sidelights, transom, and window with a premium, multi-tiered high-profile casing.
Flawless Reveals: Our carpenters used laser lines to guarantee perfectly uniform reveals and micro-pinned miter joints, giving both the grand entrance and the window a clean, high-end architectural look.
